Look, it’s bad enough that we have to begrudgingly deal with Batfleck, but now he’s threatening to take the best movie franchise DC has had to date and make it his very own.
During Comic-Con, it was reported that Ben Affleck will be co-writing, directing and starring in a new solo Batman movie; with DC’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns co-writing the script, based in part on Johns’ own Batman: Earth One comics.
While there has yet to be any confirmation of this, Affleck – in the latest Batman v Superman-centric issue of Total Film, says he is open to it:
If I could make it work, yeah. Obviously that would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it… Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.
Man of Steel and Batman v Superman producer Charles Roven confirms that they’re hoping to make it happen:
He’s about to start a movie now, and he’s also got obligations to be in the Justice League movies. The calendar is a little bit tricky. Of course, the script obviously has to be worthy of him wanting to direct it. And once that happens, it’s still got to fit into the calendar. We’re hoping we can make it happen. We’re just at the beginning of the question.
Clearly, we have our reservations. While Affleck has been deservedly recognized for his talents as a scriptwriter (Good Will Hunting) and director (Argo), he’s also the same guy who said this when explaining why he took the role of Daredevil:
I didn’t want someone else to do it, because I was afraid that they would go out and do it different from the comic and screw it up.
Daredevil goes on to get screwed up and Affleck says it’s the only movie he’s ever regretted starring in.
So you’ll forgive us if we don’t hold our breath on this one. Even so, Affleck seems pretty confident – enough that he’d picket Batman V Superman if it were anything like Daredevil.
We’ll see, Batfleck. We’ll be watching… same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.
Don’t screw this up.
