The Other Green Lantern Oaths You May Not Know About

Before the full spectrum of emotional colors was introduced in the late 2000s, there were only the Green Lanterns as well as Sinestro with his Yellow Power Ring. So, if there was to be any diversity, it would come from the Green Lantern Corps itself, especially since its members came from across all 3,600 sectors of the universe.

Interestingly, this meant that the standard Green Lantern oath didn’t always translate well and had to be adapted for the specific user.

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power: Green Lantern’s light!

Green Lantern Corps oath

Here are some of the alternate Green Lantern Corps member oaths you may not have known about. Sadly, however, these versions might have disappeared into the wayside following the various reboots and retcons of the DC Universe. Still, they were fun while they lasted:

Alpha Lantern Corps

The Alpha Lantern Corps serves as a special team and “Internal Affairs” division within the Green Lantern Corps. They were formed in the aftermath of the Sinestro Corps War and were allowed to use lethal force to enforce justice.

In days of peace, in nights of war,
Obey the laws forever more.
Misconduct must be answered for,
Swear us the chosen–the Alpha Corps!

Alan Scott

Alan Scott is the Golden Age Green Lantern but his power doesn’t come from Oa or the Guardians of the Universe. Instead, it comes from the Starheart, which was once the prison of the Guardians. Scott was saved from a train wreck by the Starheart, who found it on Earth in the shape of the lantern, in 1939.

And I shall shed my light over dark evil,
For the dark things cannot stand the light;
The light of…THE GREEN LANTERN!

Rot Lop Fan’s F-Sharp Bell

We thought this to be a particularly clever application of the Green Lantern vow. Rot Lop Fan comes from the Obsidian Deeps, a black and lightless void in a remote sector of the universe. Not needing to see, its inhabitants have evolved to lose their sense of sight and gained an advanced sense of hearing instead. So, when Rot Lop Fan became a Green Lantern, he had no concept of light or color, and the terms “green” and “lantern” bore no meaning for him. So, his oath was adapted to his sense instead.

In loudest din or hush profound,
My ears catch evil’s slightest sound.
Let those who toll out evil’s knell
Beware my power, the F-Sharp Bell!

Medphyll

Medphyll comes from the plant world, J586, and is essentially a sentient plant. His oath reflects that:

In forest dark or glade beferned,
No blade of grass shall go unturned.
Let those who have the daylight spurned
Tread not where this green lamp has burned!

Jack T. Chance’s Yowza Oath

Jack T. Chance is the Green Lantern of Garnet, also known as “Hellhole” for being one of the worst criminal worlds in the universe. The Guardians had hoped to bring order to Garnet and dispatched multiple Green Lanterns to the world, with each one unfortunately getting killed. Chance was chosen after the last Guardian-sent Green Lantern, Pathavim Seth-Ottarak, used his dying-breath to instruct his Power Ring to find a replacement from Hellhole’s native inhabitants, hoping that they would be more suitable for the challenges faced. Chance’s oath reflects his unique approach to being his planet’s Green Lantern.

You who are wicked, evil and mean,
I’m the nastiest creep you’ve ever seen!
Come one, come all, put up a fight
I’ll pound your butts with Green Lantern’s light!
Yowza.

Barin

When Barin was recruited into the Green Lantern Corps, he was attacked by a swarm of space mongrels that left him injured and comatose. While in a coma, Barin imagined himself to be a Green Lantern guarding the Gates of Hell, fighting an endless battle against demons.

In this place of black and grey and dark…
The green shall be my light, my hope, my strength.
All that is good is all I defend.
I shall not falter.

Barin’s Green Lantern oath

Sodam Yat

Sodam Yat is a Daxamite and a Green Lantern – potentially making him one of the most powerful Green Lanterns there is. Daxamites are descended from Kyptonians, which means Yat has the powers of Superman but is vulnerable to lead, instead of Kryptonite. Couple this with a Power Ring, one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, and Yat becomes nigh unstoppable!

In brightest day, through Blackest Night,
No other Corps shall spread its light!
Let those who try to stop what’s right,
Burn like my power, Green Lantern’s Light!

Sodam Yat’s Green Lantern oath

Kho

Kho Khari comes from the planet Khund, where she grew up with a fascination of Earth’s pop-culture and Wonder Woman. She became a Green Lantern when Wonder Woman persuaded  Procanon Kaa the Green Lantern of Space Sector 0422 to be her mentor.

Against Dishonor and Traitor’s Flight,
I stand beside my clan to fight,
with dying breath I claw and bite…
Beware my power–Green Lantern’s light!
