Barely a day after we discovered the Lenin-is-Darth-Vader statue in Ukraine, we come across this new gem from the same country: Chewbacca has been arrested by Ukrainian police because the Wookie was campaigning for Darth Vader.

Yeah, we’ll let that sink in a bit.

Apparently, in the city of Odessa, a candidate is using the identity of the Sith Lord to run for mayor (truly, quite a demotion from Enforcer of the Galactic Empire, no?). The person dressed as Chewbacca was arrested and fined for breaking election day rules by campaigning on voting day.

We’ll let that sink in some more.

Ukraine is apparently that galaxy far, far away: Star Wars characters such as Chewbacca, Padme Amidala and Yoda have all appeared on legitimate ballot papers in Ukrainian local politics before.

This is all due to the Internet Party of Ukraine.

Thanks to their efforts, citizens in the country’s capital of Kiev have witnessed Darth Vader being driven on its streets with stormtroopers by his side. Lord Vader has also been known to blast the Imperial March through loud speakers.

Darth Vader’s platform has been to build a “galactic empire” – while also demanding more transparency in Ukrainian politics.

And we thought that democracy was dead after the Empire was established.
