Why Former Jar Jar Binks Actor’s New Jedi Character Gets The Only Other Purple Star Wars Lightsaber

You may not recognize the name Ahmed Best, but you’ll certainly recognize the character he played more than 20 years ago in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace – Jar Jar Binks! Best is now returning to the Star Wars universe playing a new character, Jedi Master Kelleran Beq as part of a new children’s game show called Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge. On top of that, he’s going to get a purple lightsaber – a color which has only been wielded by one other before, the muthafuckin’ Jedi Master Mace Windu; played by Samuel L. Jackson!

Best explains his reasons for choosing purple in an Instagram post, where he explains how purple is the balance between red and blue kyber crystal colors, which – for him – symbolizes the balance between peace and justice. He also goes on to explain how his lightsaber design is inspired by Filipino martial art escrima, which Best studies. He goes on to explain a bit more – but it’ll be interesting to see whether he will actually get to demonstrate any lightsaber fighting skills since he’s essentially a host in a kids’ gameshow.

But who knows? All we know is that we’ll now have to squint to see whether the purple lightsaber in a crowd of Jedis is being wielded by Mace Windu, or the guy who used to play Jar Jar Binks!
