In case you didn’t know, May 25 is Geek Pride Day; chosen because of the cosmic confluence of some of the most powerful geeky ley lines!
You see, May 25 is, among others:
- When the first Star Wars film (now known as Episode IV: A New Hope) was released in 1977
- Towel Day, a day to celebrate Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy after his death in 2001
- The anniversary of The People’s Revolution of the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May, from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Since its inception in 2006, Geek Pride Day celebrates geek culture and the right of every person to be a geek. It was originally mooted by Spanish blogger Germán Martínez, and included a manifesto outlining geek rights, like:
the right not to leave your house;
the right to show off your geekiness;
the right to take over the world;
as well as responsibilities such as:
Be a geek, no matter what;
Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better;
Try to take over the world!

There’s even an official website here – although it’s in Spanish.
So why celebrate Geek Pride Day?
Geek Pride Day is celebrated worldwide with people acknowledging their geekiness and spreading it to other people. So, perhaps the best reason is simply because we should be proud of who we are! And who we are is a bunch of passionate individuals who love what we love because ZOMG WE LOVE IT!!!
So, whether you’re from a geekdom for comic books, cosplaying, video games, and technology or even those that don’t typically come top-of-mind like literature, the Renaissance, World Wars 1 and 2, history, martial arts and weaponry; whatever your flavor of geekery, there’s most likely a community of like-minded fans who love what you love. Seek them out and celebrate together, just because your geekery is worth celebrating!
However you choose to celebrate today, be proud of your geekery and just do you!
Happy International Geek Pride Day!
