Sesame Street Gets Elmo’s Dad To Explain Racism And Why People Are Protesting

Sesame Street has always been a helpful resource to families and children when it comes to explaining difficult subject matters in ways that even the youngest children can understand. They’ve certainly not shied away from the current discussion in the US regarding Black Lives Matter, racism and the protests that have erupted across the country.

In a recent sketch that is part of CNN’s latest Town Hall special, Elmo’s dad Louie tries explaining racial injustice and why people are protesting against it. His explanation really drives home why there are so many people marching to make things better for everyone else.

Louie explains that the current protest is about building empathy and embracing diversity:  “Through protesting people are able to share their feelings and work together to make things better… People are upset because racism is a huge problem in our country.” And when it comes to explaining racism, Louie said, “When people treat other people unfairly because of the way they look or the color of their skin.”
